CABL Preliminary Finals

MEN: The Flames put out as West charge into Grand Final

The West Adelaide Bearcats have pulled off a stunning finals charge, coming from fourth place and knocking off Forestville, Central Districts, and now Norwood, to make the 2014 Grand Final.

The Bearcats defeated the Flames at Mars on Saturday night by 13 points in a remarkable comeback display, winning 80-67.

After a very low scoring first quarter, Norwood took the reins with a 6-point lead at the first break. The intensity and pressure was high as both sides found it tough to shake of the nerves and truly get into the game.

A quick 8-2 run extended the Flame’s early lead out to 11 points at the start of the second quarter, but West hung on in there, only allowing Norwood to have a 4-point lead at half time (31-27). Andrew Webber accumulated 11 first half points for Norwood, while Tristan Braithwaite was doing his part for West with 10 points.

Though Norwood had the momentum at the main break, it was the Bearcats who came out and turned the tables in astonishing fashion, recording a 14-point turnaround in the third quarter. Their 15-29 quarter, led by Blake Truslove under the basket, saw the Flames fall apart and lose their superiority which they had shown greatly all game. With a quarter to go, West Adelaide led by 10 points (56-46).

However it wasn’t going to be easy to knock over Norwood, as they charged back into the match. Norwood reduced the game to a 5 point margin with 5 minutes to go, rightfully making it anybody’s game for the taking. But with a Grand Final spot on the table, the Bearcats didn’t let anything stop them, stepping up once again and essentially running away with the game.

West Adelaide managed a game-high lead of 14 points in the late stages of the game before the final buzzer ended a horror night for the home side; securing West a 13 point victory, as well as a ticket to the 2014 Grand Final.

Braithwaite finished with 21 points for the Bearcats, alongside Truslove’s huge effort of 18 points and 15 rebounds. Jason Dawson also had an effective night, ending with 14 points, 9 boards and 6 assists. Andrew Webber was top scorer for the Flames with 16 points, while teammate Matthew Lycett was impressive, notching up 11 points with 17 rebounds.

West Adelaide will take on the awaiting Woodville Warriors (who defeated Norwood in the Semi Finals to proceed) in the CABL Grand Final, which will be held at the Adelaide Arena on Saturday 30th of August at 8.15pm.

Austral Sports Turns Two!

Yes time really fly... because Austral Sports has turned two! Today is August 20th and we are celebrating our 2nd birthday.

On August 20th 2012, Austral was first launched as a graphical aid for 'The Final Word' Sports Blog, however since then - in a very rapid 24 months - we have grown into a largely developed production company!

As you can see in the picture alongside, we have accomplished some pretty amazing things in just our second year of production! Since this time last year, we have produced THREE large sporting coverages, officially launched our brand new blog website, produced a major preview of the 2013-14 Ashes Series, AND launched our newly redeveloped production design format.

We have had a large amount of success in the past year, and as of the past 6 months, Austral Sports has never had an audience as large. Things are looking up for Austral Sports, and we are even more excited to continue bringing you your sport, like you've never seen it!

In 2013, we wrote an article to commemorate our first year in production. You can read that article here.

CABL Round 17

WOMEN: Bearcats Keep Finals Hopes Alive

The West Adelaide Bearcats had their finals chances on the line on Saturday night as they went up against the Southern Tigers, and they produced the goods with a strong 31 point victory away from home.

However it wasn’t easy for the Tigers when they lost their captain to injury early in the first quarter. Kelsie Rutland landed wrong when receiving a pass, immediately crashing to the court and clutching her ankle. After inspection, the injury was diagnosed as a sprain.

West Adelaide made an early break, leading 20-5 at one stage, and then by 18 points at quarter time. Seeming like a blowout already, the Tigers held their nerve and played well to keep the margin the same at the half time break. Michaela Lappin registered an impressive 6 points and 10 rebounds in the first half for the Bearcats.

In short time West Adelaide turned it into a 31 point game, with Lappin and Sky Langenbrinck both shifting into another gear and scoring freely. Lappin had 16 points and 16 rebounds at three-quarter time.

Southern kept ticking over on the board, but never enough to reduce the margin significantly. Shayde Quintrell scored a team-high 18 points with 8 rebounds, while 15 points and 11 rebounds for Kaylee Biddell gave her a double-double for the night. Langenbrinck top-scored for West with 17 points, while Anna Carbo was close to a triple-double with 10 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds!

With the win, West Adelaide are still in the hunt for a top five placing, however their chances are incredibly slim. For them to qualify for a post-season spot, the Bearcats will require Forestville to defeat the Rockets (North have a 7-1 record away from home in 2014), while West will also need to hand Norwood, the top-seed, their third loss of the season.

MEN: West Claim Important Win

The West Adelaide Bearcats have firmly placed themselves in the top five with an important 22-point win against the Southern Tigers at Morphett Vale.

The Bearcats worked hard to get ahead, putting together a 9-2 scoring run late in the first quarter to make an important breakaway on the scoreboard. The Tigers managed to get themselves back within 4 points in the second quarter, however the Bearcats swiftly pulled away to a 16 point lead at the main break. Blake Truslove was impressive with 14 points and 6 rebounds at half time, while Anthony Spadavecchia knocked down 13 first half points for West also.

Truslove combined with Jason Dawson to assemble a destructive quarter for the Bearcats, taking their lead out to as far as 26 points at one stage. The pair put on 17 points together for the third quarter. Sam Johns was doing his best to keep Southern alive, having accumulated 11 points and 6 rebounds at three quarter time.

A much more spirited final quarter saw Southern play their best basketball of the game, though it was too late. After West Adelaide jumped ahead by 30 points, Michael Florance and his Tigers reduced the margin to as low as 19 points with a 13-2 run late in the last quarter. At the final buzzer West Adelaide finished up on top, 94-72.

Dawson and Truslove tallied similar stats at the end of the night; Truslove finished up with 22 points and 10 rebounds, alongside Dawson who had 22 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Top scorer for the Tigers was Michael Florance with 15 points.

West Adelaide take on Norwood at home next week to ensure they hold third position and take full momentum heading into the post-season, while the Southern Tigers will play their last game of the season when they take on Sturt at Pasadena.

CABL Round 16

WOMEN: Panthers Show Strong Form

The South Adelaide Panthers women had to work for it, but their 12th win of the season came Saturday night against the Eastern Mavericks on home court, prevailing by 29 points.

Despite the score at 21-14, it was difficult to split the two teams at quarter time. The Panthers’ Janae Howard hit the board early with 8 points in the first term, as her side built themselves a small lead. The Mavericks seemed threatening at stages in the second quarter, but turnovers cost them. It was a good quarter for Panthers’ team skipper, Jess Mahony, as she registered 11 first half points. Emma Hooley was the go-to girl for the Mavericks, as she marked down 12 first half points as Eastern trailed by 6 at the major break.

The second half opened up a lot more as the Panthers pounced on their opportunity, taking the front by 16 at the end of the third. Ieva Nagy, alongside Mahony and Howard, put the Panthers into top gear, stretching their lead out to 26 points in the last quarter. The final play of the game seemed ambitious, but a couple of big passes up the court to Nagy allowed her to sink a terrific buzzer-beating three to finish the match, lifting the fans to their feet, as the home side won by 29 points.

Howard and Mahony both finished with 22 points each, while Hooley starred for the Mavericks with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Mahony also finished with 10 assists and 9 rebounds, as well as an outstanding 93% free throw shooting percentage on the night, sinking 14/15 at the line!

As South Adelaide currently sit comfortably in fourth, a heavyweight clash against North Adelaide next week will decide whether the Panthers can steal the Rockets’ third position on the ladder. Both South and North are 12-4 this season.

MEN: Mavs Men Stun Panthers

The Eastern Mavericks surprised the crowd as they notched up their third win of the season against the South Adelaide Panthers at Marion Stadium on Saturday.

The Mavericks made an early burst in the first quarter and continued it throughout, forcing a double digit margin at the first break, leading 26-13. Curtis Scipio for the Mavericks knocked down two important 3-pointers in the quarter to help produce the advantage.

Eastern maintained that lead, stretching it out as far as 18 points at one stage, to head into half time with a 15-point buffer. Dylan Shorne had registered 12 points at half time with a fantastic run of shooting in the second quarter.

However it didn’t take much more than a blast from the coach at the long break to get the Panthers back in the game. South responded with fight, as they closed the gap in no time. An 8-2 run in the opening two minutes of the third quarter shook the visitors as the tables turned quickly. Shane Boal and Jordan Robertson combined to add 19 points between them for the quarter, as South shaved the margin to 2 points, before briefly taking the lead by 1 point. At the three quarter time break, the scores were level at 62-62.

But a spirited Mavs outfit hadn’t lost their composure, as the underdogs ran away with the game with an 11-2 run in the last quarter. Whatever fight the Panthers put forward, the Mavericks would match, as they wrapped the game up 73-87 at the final buzzer.

Scipio and Shorne both finished the game with 20 points, while Thomas Giles had a strong fourth quarter to end with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Top scorer for South Adelaide was Robertson with 19 points, plus Boal doubled up with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the night.

CABL Round 15

MEN Report: Rios 40 beats Tigers

Jake Rios and his Forestville Eagles downed the Southern Tigers by 20 points in a close encounter at Morphett Vale on Saturday. The 73-93 final result came largely from a remarkable display of skill assembled by Jake Rios. Rios sunk 40 points for the night, including 7 from behind the arc!

The Tigers got the early jump, opening the match with an 11-4 run, however the Eagles rallied back hard to lead by 9 at quarter time. Southern stayed in touch in the second quarter, with Sam McDaniel making his impression on the game, adding 17 points to his name by half time. The Tigers came within one point, but were behind by 4 at the main break.

Rios and McDaniel lead their teams from the front, lighting it up at their respected ends of the court. Forestville took the margin back out to double digits in the third quarter, though the contest was still incredibly even. As hard as the Tigers tried, the Eagles wouldn’t let them in at any stage in the last quarter, as they slowly increased their lead past 20 points.  Rios continued to show off his talent, superiorly smashing 18 points in the last 10 minutes of the game!

Rios had terrific support from his teammate Trent Fildes, whose double-double performance was hidden in his shadow. Fildes hit 20 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for the night. McDaniel for the Tigers was impressive also, doubling up too with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

This win means Forestville are looking firm for a top five finish, while the loss means the hopes of a post-season appearance may be fading for Southern. With three rounds to go, the competition is still well and truly in the balance. Look forward to some exciting basketball in the coming weeks.

WOMEN Report: Eagles clean up Tigers

A walloping by the Forestville Eagles inflicted the Southern Tigers with their second 50+ point loss on home court on the trot, losing 54-114 at Morphett Vale on Saturday night.

A 28-point demolition by Samantha Defrancesco was part of the cause, racking up a double-double with 10 rebounds in just her 20 minutes of court time.

The Eagles were off the mark quickly in the first quarter, keeping a 12 point distance from the Tigers at quarter time.  However they wasted no time extending that margin in the second, blowing out their lead to 36 points at one stage. Jess Fergus owned the quarter, nailing three 3-pointers in short time, and adding 11 points on her own.

A much more structured Southern outfit came out to play after half time as they managed to score 15-8 in the first five minutes of the third. Though this form was short lived, as the Eagles put together a 30 point quarter to stretch the margin out to 45 at the final change. Danielle Angley had an exciting quarter, including a 7 point run on her own.

As Southern coughed up opportunities at their end, Forestville continued their onslaught, making their way to a 60 point lead before the final buzzer ended the torment for the Tigers. 69 points off the bench for the Eagles was a major part of their win, as well as 38-8 points from turnovers.

Forestville now go to 8-6 for the season with just two round to go, hopeful of being able to hold their top five spot with the Flames, Mavs and Rockets still to come on the run home. Southern’s record only worsens, dropping now to 3-12 with the Warriors, Bearcats and Sabres left to play.

CABL Round 13

MEN Report: Tigers still seek Finals

The Southern Tigers kept their finals hopes alive on Saturday, taking their record to 6-7 with a 5 point over the North Adelaide Rockets at Morphett Vale Stadium.

The Tigers raced away at the start, opening up a 9 point lead at the first break, and then going on to create a 13 point buffer at half time. Rocket’s captain Thomas Rowe worked hard to inspire his side in the second quarter, however it was tough going. Southern’s Samuel Johns and Sam McDaniel had 8 points each at half time, as did as Pero Vasiljevic and Daniel Goodluck for the Rockets.

The third quarter was kept relatively even for the most part until a three from Luke Mapunda gave the Rockets that much needed spark to draw the game closer. Goodluck fired away bringing the margin back to 4 points, before a miraculous half-court shot from Luke Pike on the three-quarter time buzzer left the two sides separated by only a point!

The fourth quarter went eye for an eye all the way to the end, with both the Rockets and Tigers sharing the reigns during the quarter. Southern were holding onto a small 4-point lead for majority of the quarter after the Rockets peeped ahead by a point at one stage. The crucial three-pointer to square the scores with 10 seconds to go was missed by Rowe, allowing the Tigers to eventually prevail by 5 points.

McDaniel had a brilliant night under the bucket, pulling down 15 rebounds to go with his team-high 16 points. Cody Ellison contributed 13 points, as well as 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Goodluck sunk 17 points as North Adelaide’s top scorer, alongside Rowe with 11 points and Vasiljevic with 10.

WOMEN Report: Rockets Demolish Tigers

The North Adelaide Rockets had a night out at Morphett Vale on Saturday, smashing the Southern Tigers by a hefty 58 points to notch up their tenth win of the season – the competition’s second highest defeat of 2014.

Jo Hill quietly stamped her place in the game early on for the Rockets, chalking up 11 points in the first quarter. The Rockets lead by 10 points at the first break, but only due to some clutch three-point shooting from Southern’s Kelsie Rutland, who sunk two threes quickly before the break to give the scoreline some respectability.

However the second quarter began the flow of one-way traffic, with turnovers proving vastly expensive for the Tigers (37-13 points from turnovers for the match), as they watched their opposition cruise to a 22-point lead at half time. Rutland did all she could for her struggling side, racking up 20 points at the half. Hill and Jamie-Lee Peris had tallied 9 steals between them at that point for North Adelaide.

The experience of the Rocket’s talls were evident in the second half, as Hill and Peris shut down a lot of the Tiger’s scoring action in defence. Smart, smooth and well executed plays in transition to offense were all North Adelaide cared to display, as they made their way to a 33-point lead at the last change.

However it was a blow-out final quarter that had everybody shell-shocked, as the Rockets went 34-9 for the final ten minutes of the game, extending the margin to 58 points at the close.

Rutland played the entire second half without a break, only to register 2 points. Hill finished with 24 points, 12 rebounds and 8 steals, alongside Peris who managed 13 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals for the night. Jess Smart also starred for the Rockets, finishing with 18 points, 6 assists and 6 steals.

CABL Round 10

MEN Report: Norwood rout Sabres at Home

The Norwood Flames made a complete mess of the Sturt Sabres on Saturday night at MARS Stadium, running away with a 33-point win.

A balanced opening quarter wasn’t surprising, as Mark Bauer and Jordan Heading got involved early for the Sabres and made themselves known. Norwood’s Mathew Lycett seemed very comfortable on home court, helping the Flames to a 6 point lead the first break.

Sturt kept up with the Flames at the beginning of the second, however a 14-2 run was what steamrolled the Sabres into the ground. Norwood showed pure class under extreme pressure and at high intensity, with the margin escalating from 3 points to 20 all in the one quarter, as the Flames lead 45-26 at the half time break.

Maher’s men came out bolstering out of the gates in the second half with a bit of spark, however it only got uglier. Matthew Long combined with Andrew and Daniel Webber to force the lead out to 28 points and really stamp their authority on the game. Norwood lead 71-43 with a quarter to play.

The Flames took the fourth quarter as an opportunity to give their bench players some extra run on the court, as they continued to force high intensity pressure and restrict a lot of scoring in defence. The final score saw the Flames win by a comfortable 33 points, 89-56.

After a 33 point exhibition last week against the Tigers, Dexter Moore (Sabres) had a poor night, sinking 2/21 field goal attempts, and 9 points all together for the night. The only Sabre to score double digits was Heading with 13 points. Norwood’s talls were dominant in the paint, scoring 40 points to 18 inside the lane. Long finished up with 19 points for the night, while Lycett scored 16 points and 9 rebounds. Daniel Webber also scratched up 16 points for himself.

WOMEN Report: Flames' streak ends in Overtime

In what was undoubtedly the most astonishing match we have seen so far this year, the Sturt Women prevailed in enemy territory as they snapped Norwood’s remarkable 31-game win streak in a one point overtime thriller at MARS Stadium on Saturday night.

This game had it all - and if 11 tied scores and 17 lead changes for the night doesn’t tell you enough, the margins will.

The game was relatively even to start the game, with the scores level 20 apiece at quarter time. The intensity was high and it was telling that the next three quarters were going to be just as tough. Hannah Richards (Sabres) wasted no time making her presence known under the bucket, while Jessica Good and Amy Lewis (Flames) made strong first impressions on the game.

The second quarter saw Norwood pull away, as they found themselves back in their familiar game-controlling character. Some poor passing errors in offense for Sturt helped the Flames build a comfortable 11 point lead, with Lewis and Cara Boothy stepping up to the plate for the Flames. In the final play of the quarter, Natalie Novosel (Sabres) sunk three points to restrain the deficit to only 6 points (44-38).

Inspired by Novosel, Sturt replied with more fight in the third quarter, working their way back into the game. The Sabres produced an astounding 27-15 quarter, tipping the tables entirely on the game. Kelsey Ireland thought she had kept the margin to three points at the final break, sinking one from behind the arc with seconds remaining; however Caroline Burgess brought the house down with a magical half-court launch on the buzzer to put Sturt back in front by 6 at the final change! (59-65)

The Flames came out firing, although a three-point shot from Lucy Spalding put the Sabres in a commanding position, as they lead by 10 points with seven minutes to play. However some terrific basketball from Good and Lewis brought Norwood back into the contest, squaring the game up with just two minutes to go, and leading by three points with only 4 seconds remaining.

The final pass in from the sideline for Sturt found Kate Gladstone, and standing three metres from the three point arc, she swished an incredible shot on the buzzer to take the game into overtime with the scores at 80-80!

A one point lead was bounced back and forth between both teams in the overtime period as they exchanged goals at each end, before Novosel came to the rescue once more with 13 seconds left to put the Sabres in front. Norwood had the chance to win the game with the final two possessions, but they were both no good and Sturt scraped across the line in what was an epic nail-biter for the ages!

Natalie Novosel contributed a spirited 34 point performance, assisted by Richards and Spalding who finished with 15 points each. Boothy and Lewis amounted 24 and 25 points respectively, while Good brought down 14 rebounds along with 12 points. But as for Norwood, it just wasn’t enough, as they fall to their first loss of the season, and their first in 31 games – a record which will stand as one of the greatest in the competition’s history.

Aussies Over-Confident?

Every Australian sports fan knows that there's nothing better than thumping our English rivals in the Ashes, especially after being beaten three series' in a row! Revenge is oh-so sweet, and Australia has been making the most of this celebration. The whole country has established a cult following behind Mitchell Johnson and his newly trademarked 'mo', and the critics have finally hushed about Pup's captaincy by sticking party blowers in their mouths. This is all great, but have we all been celebrating for too long?

Of course, after any team wins a premiership one season, there always comes that time where the celebrations end and the focus is shifted back onto preparing for the next season. Unfortunately in cricket, because the game has no proper 'off-season' where the players can celebrate and refocus, the players are effectively shifted from their glory and celebrations of one series immediately into a new one. Because of this, the momentum and confidence from the last series is still well and truly alive within the playing group, however this is where it can go one of two ways.

That momentum can be helpful in terms of building confidence - when the side is in trouble in the match, the team's capabilities can be easily be reassured. However if the momentum is so much that it effects the way the players play, then things can get very dangerous.

The first test against South Africa is a perfect example. Several players traveled over to South Africa early to begin their preparations while the one day series was being played back at home. However despite the fact that the team's full focus was on South Africa, there is no doubt that after such a miraculous and emotionally driven victory on home soil that the Aussie playing group's tails were up higher than ever before in any of their careers. In the first test, three Australian batsmen hit centuries while the bowlers restricted South Africa to 200 and 206 - Australia won comfortably by 281 runs on Day 4. An embarrassing loss for the home side, and those Aussie tails began wagging even higher again. South Africa, the country that the world's media had claimed would be the one team that would give Australia a run for their money, got walked all over.

However the tables turned in the second test, almost identically. Three South African batsmen made centuries, while their bowlers kept Australia to just 246 and 216. South Africa won by 231 runs on Day 4. It all changed in such a short space of time... and the question is, how?

Australia's spearhead, Johnson, only managed to back up his extraordinary 12 wicket haul in the first test with 3 wickets in the second test. Shaun Marsh backed up his 192 run first test (including his impressive 148) in Centurion with a pair of ducks in Port Elizabeth. The difference? The efforts in the first test match were disciplined and the achievements were earned. South Africa played a brand of cricket that Australia had played against them in the previous test, and that they had also been playing all summer at home against England. This second test saw a much more aggressive and determined South African side and, what seemed like, an unusually relaxed Australian outfit.

Though there is one Australian player who has kept his consistent aggressive form throughout both tests, and that's David Warner. Warner is known for his aggressive style of batting, and he knows that he plays best when he is in that mentality. With 115 in the second innings of the first test, followed by 70 and 66 in the second test, Warner is the single player in the Aussie dressing room with any consistent form. Don't turn your head to Clarke, not one of his last 11 innings have exceeded 25 runs. Haddin has only managed just 10 runs from three innings. And Rogers may have hit 107 in Port Elizabeth, but his three innings prior to that (1, 4 and 5) tells us it was a display of discipline and grit as he stuck in with Warner in a time of need.

So we ask the question, has Australia become a little over-confident with themselves? Have they taken the foot off the accelerator? Without the aggressive attitude towards the game and drive to take on the opposition, the Australian team does not look as intimidating. South Africa found the way to expose that side of Australia, and in the third test beginning on Saturday, both sides will be ardent and ready to show who really is the most fierce team in the world of test cricket.
